The modern church’s teaching on Jesus’ famous last words before his ascension has fallen prey to the spirit of inclusivity. The Great Commission has come to mean anything and everything, which ironically empties it of any specific definition.

This vagueness has led to confusion and ineffectiveness in missions. When a team ignores the fundamentals, when the offense is sputtering with one too many fadeaways or trick plays, the coach calls a timeout and demands the huddle to “Get back to the basics.” Blocking and tackling. The church needs to do the same with regard to the Great Commission. The early church understood that the marching orders of the Great Commission (to go, make disciples, baptize, and teach) could be summarized in a word: plant churches.
